Thurs Ap 20 [20 April 1911] Temp 43 Bar 26.2. Went with Mr Barstow
to the upper castle which is 500 ft above the mission houses. Building
inscrip over the gate and a pair of lions or leopards (Dr Thom says
they are Persian and have the sun behind their heads). I cd see
nothing old in the castle. On one of the bastions and on the minaret of
the mosque are inscrips like two sads [2 characters] on the mosque
and [ditto] on the bastion. Saw the room which Guyer had opened. It
looks like a vaulted cistern, piers and walls rock cut. So down to the
Zengiriyyeh and the mosque where a huge crowd gathered as I
photographed the inscrips by the E gate and on the minaret. So to
Mar Mikhail (O. Syrian) where nothing but the plan seemed to be old
and past the Jami el Asfar where I photographed a good inscrip. So
home. After lunch we went down to the Kazimiyyeh Medresseh, 13th c
like the Zengiriyyeh and on much the same plan. Unfortunately I cd
not see the 3 mosques as they were closed. There is a 4th mosque
standing by itself to the W, also closed but I saw fine groined vaulting
through the stone pierced windows. Also good groined vaulting in the
cloister of the medresseh. Made the acquaintance of the Emrich's old
ustad who is a Sayyid and a relative of Muhammad Sa'id of Dara. A
great storm swept up from the plain and we got very wet going home.
Then the sun came out and I ran down again to the medresseh and
photographed. Dined with the Thoms. Mr Andrus came to dinner and
we had a great talk over maps of the Tur Abdin. After dinner a Miss
Dewey came in and another girl.
