Sat Feb 11. [11 February 1911] Furious hurricane in the night. I woke
once to hear F. [Fattuh] hammering in tent pegs. He said it was
snowing a little, but nothing to matter. At 5.30 he called to me asking if
I was cold. I put out my hand and found the Wolsey valise all wet.
Lighted a candle and saw a foot of snow in my tent. Dry out my hat
and boots and put them under the valise - all the rest of my clothes
there already. At dawn F. dragged out the waterproof sheet and
brought me breakfast. Then we cleared out the tents. The snow
came in gusts all day and sleet in the afternoon - but melted very fast.
Temp 39 at 10 o'clock, Bar. 27 3/10 [three tenths]. It rose in the
evening. In the afternoon as I was cutting hatab, 7 Arabs of the
Haseneh rode in, one of them Sheikh Milhem. They had just had 70
camels stolen from them by the Jebeliyeh. They had slept out and
were going to a camp somewhere in the hills. We gave them coffee,
dates, tobacco and they rode off in another storm. I spent the day
reading Weekly Timeses and sitting in Sheikh Muhammad's tent.
