Fri July 9. [9 July 1909] Wrote letters in the garden. Hussein Hilmi
Pasha and an aide de camp came to lunch, also Mr Hohler and Mr
Fitzmaurice. The Grand Vizier had been many years in Syria of which
we talked. Afterwards we went to the Polo ground where I met the
Austrian Ambassador (who was here last time) and the Italian who
speaks English very well and was 1st sec. in Berlin in Uncle Frank's
time. Large dinner party of farewell to the Russian Ambassador. I sat
between Mr Bopp[?], French 1st Sec. very pleasant, and Mr Mouncey.
Afterwards talked to the Italian ambassador and Captain Gedge
Pasha, Captain of the Khedive's yacht. Then played Bridge with Mr
Einsteen, Mr Vere, and Mr Hohler. Col and Mrs Surtees were here
and very friendly.
