Thurs July 8. [8 July 1909] Mr Graves and I went to Yildiz and walked
all over the big park. Very badly planted, all the views obstructed by
trees. Menageries at all corners, most empty, some still occupied by
unhappy little beasts of the genus badger, sitting uncomfortably in the
sun, and dishevelled birds. Ponds of dirty green water and a horrible
gaunt orangery. The kiosks open. Hideous European furniture and
incredible pictures. In one a ...... lithograph advertisement of a
German manufactory of machinery hung on the walls; in another an
allegorical piece representing a German and a Turkish soldier
embracing on a pedestal at the foot of which were piled up artificial
flowers. A very elaborate shooting range in another kiosk. Finally we
got into the Harem garden and then found a small restaurant
established by the famous serpentine pond so we lunched. The
canoe worked like a sewing machine was taking fat Greek tourists
about. So back, packed and had tea with Mr Christian who is staying
in the hotel. To Therapia where they received me most kindly. They
were dining out so I dined with Mr Hohler, Mr Mouncey, Mr Ramsay
and another.
