Sat Ap 3. [3 April 1909] Breakfasted at 6.30 with Wetzel, then went out
till 10.30 and photographed. Came in and began a letter to the Times
which I finished after lunch. I also read de Beylie's Samarra and
made notes. At 4 rode out to the Homera, Matrah Iskander as my
soldier said, and saw the remains of the Greek theatre built of
Nebuch. bricks; but nearly all of them have been stolen away. So
home and found the 2 Germans paying their workmen - a miserable
crew for the most part, ragged, undersized, one eyed and half
starved. The two head servants Murad and Na'oum[?] have been
here for 10 years. They are established here with their wife and family
- Xians, good men.
