Mon Ap 26. [26 April 1909] Very sorry to go. Off at 6.15 and caught up the baggage in about an hour. An evil faced Sayyid rides with us. Fattuh loq: "I love thieves and ...., Jezid and Druse, but I do not love Sayyids or Mullahs." Ride without incident. We had to go some way round owing to the Tigris floods. Lunched for half an hour and got into camp beyond Gayara Tell [Qayyarah] at 2.30. There are pitch streams near here - we crossed 2. My tent by the Tigris. Beautiful light over the hilly Assyrian landscape on the other side - bare hills and by the river tells with groups of tents near the. The rocky hills below Assur [Ashur] they call Assyrian Switzerland.
