Fri. 20. [20 February 1903] Up at 5, got ourselves safely to the Mackinnon Ghat - onto the launch and then had to wait for the health officer - they make a lot of fuss over the plague inspection. S.S. Tara, B.I. quite new and very comfortable [space left blank] tons. I have a cabin to myself. 3 Austrians, an enormous American family called Warren, another called Foster, she's a nice woman and various merchants and stray people. Slept some of the morning. We missed our tide and had to lie in the river. Went on again and anchored at 6. The Hoogli [Hugli] is excessively dangerous, the sand banks change every tide and there's very little water on the bar. We ran down and sank a dhow. Read Shway Yoe. After dinner played Bridge with Mr Warren and Mrs Foster. I sit by the chief officer; opposite an American called Slater and his wife, common people.
