Wed 22. [22 January 1902] Very hot morning. The sun was so
scorching that I went and read inside. After lunch did some Italian with
Hugo. We ran down the coast, low sandy hills a good deal covered
with scrub of sorts, most uninviting. We passed Cap Blanc [Blanc, C]
at 5 and saw the great iron bridge across the harbour of Biserta
[Bizerte] in the dusk. After dinner we were passing across the Bay of
Tunis - a lovely night with the moon near full. I sat on deck and talked
to the Captain and came up again after Bridge and sat till 10.30
watching the red lights on Zambra [Zembra, Ile] throbbing like a heart.
The sea was peopled with shadowy Carthagenian ships loaded with
fighting men and with elephants, and with the luckless triremes and
pentekraters of Agathocles of which only the pious were to see the
Sicilian shores again and then as Carthagenian booty.
