Wed Ap 4 [4 April 1900] Off about 7. Quite a cool clear morning and it never got hot all day. We lunched in the valley just past Kasr Rabba [Rabba]. The plains were full of buyut sh'ar and flocks and ploughmen. At the Kasr was an encampment of soldiers. Stayed at our lunching place from 11.30-12 and rode on over the top of Shihan where we were rewarded by a wonderful view. Covered with foundations and bi'rs and a big ruin on top which looked more modern. I also saw a few feet of the old black paved road running west. Got down to the sail in the Mojib [Mujib (Arnon)] at 3.30 and found the Johnsons just starting off to the Waleh. My mules didn't arrive till 5. The grass and daisies very much burnt up; it must have been very hot here. The oleanders further out and the white tamarisk lovely. I bathed and had a long talk with Mohammad who is a Druse. The moon is beginning to be lovely. I rode my own horse who seems fit. The flies were awful till sunset down here.
