Mon 26. [26 February 1900] Rainy but no wind and the Germans were
able to land in Jaffa [Tel Aviv-Yafo (Joppa)]. Charlotte and I started
off after lunch and went down to Ain Tulma. There was a rushing
stream in the Lifta valley and we had to take off our shoes and
stockings and wade. The water came above our knees. Too pretty
to see a river in the landscape. The banks carpeted with anemones,
a field of scarlet. Lots of Bait Iksa boys at Ain Tulma who helped us to
pick cyclamen of which there were heaps. A lovely place, the rocks
round the spring draped with maiden hair. Heaps of garlic. Came
home by Lifta wading the stream again and wandered over the flat
roofs jumping across the streets amid barking dogs. Hired some little
boys to carry our flowers and I hurried home to my lesson.
