Sat 6. [6 May 1899] Off early to Prinkipo [B¸y¸kada] by steamer.
There we lunched at a delicious hotel (Calypso) on a veranda
overlooking the sea. Then took a carriage and drove round the
island - lovely view to the Asian coast and over the Island of Halke.
Walked up to the monastery of St George where a friendly Greek
couple offered us rose jam and coffee. Hot lovely day, lots of white
and purple cistus, and a charming white heath. Took a boat and
rowed and sailed over to the coast of Asia to a little place called Mal
Tepe [Maltepe] where we caught the train to Haidar Pasha
[Haydarpasa] and so home by boat, getting in past 7. The Berkeleys
had Mr Scott of the Embassy and another man to dinner. They were
dull!
