Tues. 2 [2 May 1899] And very early breakfast after which young Mrs
C. took us through green wooded fields to see the Scamander
[Menderes, Kanal], a fine river. Left at 7.30 and got to Dardanelles
[Canakkale] in a shower of rain at 12. Our boat, a Rubatlina Stura, just
going. Flew up to the Consulate and thanked Mr Calvert, then
embarked. We think that Jacob did us finely over the exchange.
2500 sheep on board! Our only fellow passenger was a German girl
teaching in the American mission school at Smyrna [Izmir]. Very funny
conversation at dinner. Uncle Tom shone.
