Sat. 8. [8 April 1899] Hot sun and cold wind. Up pretty early. After breakfast drove with Papa to the German School where we presented our letter from Sir Edwin E. to Dörpfeld and asked if we might come to his lecture. He is a most charming, good looking person and said yes with much affability. Then to the British School where we found Mr Hogarth and looked at maps and photographs. Picked up Uncle Tom and went to the Museum where we met Mr Hogarth who showed us pots 4000 B.C. and frescoes with a delightful pattern of flying fishes. Mr Bell joined us, we looked at the Mycaene [Mycenae] gold then at statues. Met Mr Aide and Mr Hird and took them to see pots. Home to lunch. Afterwards Papa and I shopped and then joined the German party between the Areopagus and the Pnyx, Dörpfeld most affable. He lectured for 8 hours, showed us the foundations of a dateless large old Dionysus temple and demonstrated that the fountain of [space left blank] mentioned by Pausanias lay here and not on the Illysus. We saw most interesting remains of the Greek fountain buildings built into a Roman house. Bought photographs and so home to dinner.
