Tues 11. [11 April 1899] Lovely day. Breakfasted early and off to
Sunium [Kato Sounion]. Mr Bell went to the early train to see us off
and appeared after breakfast! Very pleasant journey of 3 hours,
round between Hymettus [Imittos] and Pentelikus [Pendelikon]. Then
by the bluest of seas with Euboean mountains [Evvoia] in the
distance. From Laurium, where the silver mines are, we drove by a
desolate charming road skirting the sea. White and purple cistus and
yellow poppies. Sunium stood wonderfully white against a blue blue
sea with islands out to the horizon. Lunched and photographed with
our English boy. In front of the temple there is a little platform with a
dead man's bones on it, then a steep drop into the sea. Drove back
to Laurium and so home by train. Lovely sunset and the thinnest
smallest moon. Got home at 7. After dinner talked to Mr Aide and Mr
Hird then packed.
