Tues 12. [12 April 1898] Lovely day. Mr P. M [Maurice] and Mr M
[Mainwaring] to Kobe. The P [Pessimist] Mr de R [de Rutzen] Di and I
by train to Uji - delicious place. Ordered lunch at a tea house at the
end of the bridge walked up to the Phoenix Hall lovely drooping
cherry. Red Torii across the river Mr de R and I walked over the
bridge to it and found a little temple. Took a sampan. Struggle with
the tea house people over rice and we victors[?]. Dropped down the
river to Fushimi lunching on eggs oranges and rice as we went. Took
kuromas to the Kari temple, crowded with people and ..... and so
home. Tea and a sad farewell to the P. Then Mr de R and I went up
to the photograph shop and on to Kurodani where the two pine trees
are, cherries lovely in the sunset did not succeed in seeing the
standing Buddha but saw all the little ones thanks to a kind priest.
Home at 7. Found M. and Mr M.; dined and to bed.
