Fri. 4 [4 March 1898] Rainy. Sat on deck while the Pessimist gave me directions as to Japan. Mr Adam told me about Stevenson's San Francisco days. He was there two years trying to get the Frisco papers to accept his articles - in vain. A Lodging for a Night was written at Monterey. Mr A. lived in the lodging S. occupied. Loyd Osborne is married and settled in Berkeley across the bay L.S.'s old landlady is now dead. He lodged in Merchant St. Mr A. bought his writing table. After lunch the Pessimist and I learnt Jap history then played whist with M [Maurice] and Mr Adam. Tea party. After dinner lost 2 games of chess to the Admiral. Came up and saw the lights of Yokohama; talked to the Pessimist. Grand Hotel man came on board, told us of the sinking of the Maine[?]. Snowing. The P. in a touching speech begged that we wd not vanish into space but wd use him in every way. To bed at 11. The club went for a mad jinrickshaw ride and got back at 2 AM.
