Sat 12. [12 March 1898] Off at 9, picked up the P. [Pessimist] and rode
to Kamakura where we arrived at 12. Grey but pleasant riding all
along soft paths in and out of hills and valleys and villages and rice
fields, past shrines and temples numberless, 20 miles. Found our
luggage at Kamakura. Delicious inn by the sea. Lunched and went
out temple seeing - Hachiman with a long long avenue. Torii, a fox[?]
temple up countless broken steps. Ennoji to see Emma O, Kenchoji
to Jizo - a wonderful Chinese gate there, Engakoji where we saw the
big bell and the 100 Kwannons. The P. home - he had a bad cold -
and we 4 on to Daibutsu very solemn and imposing in his garden, the
first great thing I have seen. Exquisite droop of the head and eyes
and heavy shoulders. Home to tea. Mr Plummer arrived, merry
dinner.
