Sat 29 [29 January 1898] Reached Champerico at dawn - usual tiny
row of houses along the narrow beach; breakers in front, trees behind
and a row of volcanoes behind all. Read Arabic till 12. During lunch a
huge shark was caught. Slept. Read Renan. Tea with the Storms. It
is a little cooler in the mornings now but still very hot in the day and at
night. The old doctor is rather an old dear; we photograph together;
he has got an amusing caustic manner. His son on the other hand is
neither entertaining nor pleasant. The Moores keep themselves to
themselves - except as far as we are concerned. Sat and talked to
them after dinner and then played patiences with the Pattinsons.
