Tues. 25. [25 January 1898] Up soon after 7. Watched the boats
coming in laden with parrots and carved gourds for sale. Talked to
Mr Hushardt and Mr Strang till breakfast. After breakfast went on
shore - horrid little sandy place. Sat in Mr Pomarez' office for a little
and then came back leaving Mr Pomarez and Mr Strang on shore. Mr
S. is going inland to survey for the Nicaraguan Canal. Hot afternoon.
We made elaborate signals with towels from the ship to Mr Strang on
shore. Off at 5 and out on the top of the tide. Lovely light on the three
hills behind Corinto. Wonderful phosphorescence. The ship cut
through glittering waves of silver.
