Mon 24. [24 January 1898] It was too dark to get in by the morning tide
so we had to wait till 4 o'clock in the afternoon. Finished the Conquest
of Mexico talked and read lazily all day. An Italian sits next me at
dinner with whom I talk in French. At 3 a boat in front of us got into the
harbour and at 4 we weighed anchor and went in through a narrow
entrance and got behind a low island and up an estuary where we
anchored off Corinto - a few low verandaed houses smothered in
palms along the water's edge. A beautiful outline of 3 hills connected
by ...... cols inland. Exquisite red sunset with the crescent moon
holding the old moon in her arms.
