Thur. 13 [13 January 1898] A good deal of wind on today and the ship
rolled a great deal. A shower drove me off the deck and I read Arabic
and wrote downstairs. After dinner a nap on deck. After tea Renan
and a walk and talk with the chaplain who is a dullard. Wonderful
cloudless sunset, the red ball going straight into the sea and a
marvellous glow after it. After dinner read Renan and to bed at 10.30.
