Mon 14. [14 August 1899] Very hot. Walked about the town with F
[Florence] and Mr C [Chirol] and met the Harrachs and Countess
Witzthum. Drove out to the Eremitage a charming little place where
we lunched after looking at the fountains. Mrs Earle was there with
Mme Grunelius and a girl. F, Hugo and I had tea with Miss Weisse
and Tovey - coffee and Sandkuchen. We all walked up to the theatre
where as usual Mr Schuster and Mr Phillips were having Empfang.
Met Mr Dugdale and Mr Lindsay. Our seats just in front of all the
Pollocks. Very splendid performance but absurdly pantomime. Lots
of it didn't seem to me to be music at all. The first scene exquisite,
awfully bored with Nibelheim. Wotan very good. We dined after the
play. Met the Harrachs outside. Moberly Bells and Lady Conway
dined with us. She's an awful woman and we are sick of the M. Bells.
Mr Wortley came and talked to us. F. Hugo and I walked on ahead
home and met Tovey and Miss W. with whom we talked. [Cast list for
Das Rheingold attached to page.]
