Friday 14 [14 April 1893] Left for Paris at 10. Pleasant rather hot, journey. Went to Maurices and dined. Afterwards to Ruy Blas at the Francais. If I had been Victor Hugo I'ld have cut[?] that play, since he hadn't thought of it we did it for him for we came away after the third act. Maurice's gives me an odd sort of sadness. Last time I was here was when we were starting for Persia and Bill came to see us off. Dear! how I cared! It is odd that one's most ardent feelings should be so transitory.
