Mon. Dec. 1. [1 December 1913] Shopped in the morning and called
on Muhammad Pasha Adam who was not very cordial. He is an old
obscurantist and completely pooh poohs the Arab movement. Took
observations after lunch. Mr Devey brought me a letter from Dick.
Long talk with Dr 'Abd al Rahman, Georges Effendi and 'Abd al
Wahhab about the Arab movement. Sayyid Talib, Naqib of Basrah
[Basrah, Al (Basra)] has called a gathering of the Arab Sheikhs.
Mubarak of Qweit [Al Kuwayt (Kuwait)], the Muntafiqs, the Sha'lans, Ibn
Sa'ud, Muhammerah. They are to meet in two months' time at Qweit.
The Imam is not of it nor is he so important as al Idasi who is gradually
eating up the Yemen. Ibn Rashid has said he wd be represented but
he is halfhearted. The Govt has increased his subsidy. They have
also given a motor and various presents to the Sherif of Meccah
[Makkah] but it is said that a son of his is to go as his representative to
Qweit. Facowaz of the Sakh is said to be a good Arab unionist. "The
first time the desert has been united since the time of the Prophet"
said Abd al Rahman. He says all the leading families here are
unoinists, or at least all the younger members - the younger
Adabys[?], 'Atta Bey Killani etc. Mr M. Philips Price came to see me
after dinner, from Aleppo [Halab] and the north.
