Sat June 12. [12 June 1909] Off at 6.20. Bitter cold and a wind. We rode down to the Levanti Chai (the second of the name) which we reached at 6.50. Then straight up hill. Near the top was a village of 2 houses appropriately named Büchük Kürna[?] 7.15. Summit 7.25. Above us a great plateau of cliffs approachable only from one side said the zaptieh called Kala Dagh. We now saw the wide valley of the Tochja Su [Tohma] and rode down into it, 8 Kurt K. below us to the left Zekker Hajji. 8.40 Samah, a big village, 9.20-10.30 Ozan where there is a charming tomb and a still more charming headman who gave me mulberries when I had finished work. The people here are Turks not Kurds. 11.5 Mulla Ali Shehr, a tiny place by the stream. Then 35 min. lunch. 12.35 Polat Ushagha. 12.55 Tozeli some way from the river to the left. 1 Karlola[?] on the river to the R. 1.5 Diwanda. 1.20 a ruined khan of no interest. At 1.25 up a valley to the right a charming big village called Palanka, about 11/2 miles or 2 m away under a cliff. Then we climbed up a bluff - the river flows through a very narrow rocky gorge - on top of which were remains of a small fort (2.20) and down to Kötü Kala (2.45) where we found the camp pitched by the stream. They had taken 61/2 hours.
