Friday June 11 [11 June 1909] Left Elemendik at 6.5. Windy and cold. I find[?] that this chiflik belongs to the mother of the Sultan's brother. At 7.40 we reached another great chiflik of Abd ul Hamid's. At 9-10.50 Argha. Here I went to see the ruins of a church, marble columns and bases. We turned over one of the columns to find an inscrip written in red paint but it had disappeared. The whole church has had a marble pavement. At I think the W end it is of fine mosaic; they uncovered a bit for me to see. Then I went up to the kishla where there is a cap from the church and some slabs with crosses, one with an inscrip. I found a party of military officers, one called Hilim[?], an oldish man, from Damascus [Dimashq (Esh Shams, Damas)] and we had a pleasant conversation in Arabic. Finally I returned to the town and was put into the hands of 2 soldiers who were charged to show me ruins. We went up hill and crossed a small valley, Devele Deressi at 11.45 where we caught up the baggage. Then we climbed again and at the top stood over the splendid rocky valley of Levandi Chai. Here I lunched for half an hour and got down to the river at 1.20. Muhammad Agha the Kurdish mudir of Levandiler (they are all Kurds here) gave us Iran. We then climbed up the other side (very steep and rocky) in the company of 2 Kurdish boys who reported an inscrip. on the rocks far away on the other side and a ruined church somewhere. But there were few ruins they said. At 2.20 we came to the high village of Chatagh lying in the upper parts of a valley that runs down to the Levandi. At 2.45 we reached the summit of the pass and wound down to the village of Lerat which we reached at 3.15 and camped on some open ground among oak trees. The oaks here have lovely much serrated leaves. Temp. 67. Beautiful hills and cliffs all round. (This village is Kizilbash - very nice people.)
