Tuesday May 11. [11 May 1909] Off at 6. 1400. We went up stream and crossed the Khabur by the bridge. At 8.45 we came to Durnakh [Dornaq] where we had the Heizil Su [Hezil] to cross. It had run down a good deal and the ferry boat was gone but the water was very deep. The whole village turned out and stripped to escort us over. The water came up to my knee. At 10.20 Tell Kabun where nothing remains but one ruined building. The village has moved up about 2 or 3 miles nearer the hills. At 12 Gerik (the G is hard). At 12.25 we came to a delightful oak grove on the hill side and I lunched there till 12.55. We caught up the baggage (they had stopped to let the horses eat the wonderful grass) a little beyond Geurmuk which we passed at 1.30. At 2.25 we got to Dadar, mostly tents and at 3 to Hassana, just inside the gorge. 2400. Splendid steep rocky gorge with thunder rolling through it. We pitched tents by the stream in a sharp shower. The village is Xian, partly Nestorian and partly Prot ie converts of the American mission. They talk Fellahi (which I fancy is Assyrian!) and Kermani. Fortunately the Prot priest speaks Arabic. They have been terribly harried by the Kurds. 3 years ago all their cattle were carried off, crops and village burnt. This year things are better, he thinks because of the new govt. Heavenly mountain camp.
