Friday March 26. [26 March 1909] And also breakfasted with him.
Spent the whole day, 8 hours of it, in measuring the castle. Lunched
uncomfortably in the heat and the dust of my tent off cold tongue. At 5
Fattuh and Jusef appeared with the caravan behind, having left at 8.
Ali's people live and die in the courts of princes. There was an old
man dying in one of the central rooms and when I went to measure the
last block of all, a woman waved me away: they were laying out and
washing the body of an old woman. When I came back half an hour
later they had taken her away and buried her. The wet stones on
which the body had lain and a strong smell of wood smoke were all
that remained. Great joy at getting my camp again.
