Wed. Feb. 3. [3 February 1909] Off at 5.30, moon setting over
Lebanon, very cold. Got to Hama [Hamah] at 10.30 and had an hour
to lunch. Walked out to my camping place and saw the beautiful town.
The rly follows the Orontes ['Asi] for some way but turns off before
Kal'at at Mudik. Rain in the afternoon. Reached Aleppo [Halab] at 4
and went to the Palace Hotel which however is so horrid I don't think I
can stay. Went to the hospital and saw Dr Altounyan about my hand.
Nothing much. Then called on the Griffeths at the Aziyeh. Horrible
dinner in overheated room full of Greeks.
