Tues. 26. [26 January 1909] Fine at last. The storm had delayed us
and we did not get to Alexandria till 3 though we were due at dawn. I
left most of my luggage on board and taking enough for 2 days,
abandoned the ship with joy. Drove about Alexandria and went to the
museum. A lot of Coptic things. 3 fine large caps of basket work with
a flower on each side - 6th c I should say. Some large Ionic cushion
caps possibly a little earlier. A good many Ivories, the nymph motive
frequent but the Bacchus absent. A couple of horrible Ledas in stone.
A stone relief of St Menas between the camels and a good many
Ampullas. There is besides an interesting headless porphyry statue
of the Roman period which must be compared with the one at Cairo.
Tea and leben in the town and so to the station where I caught the 6
o'clock train and got to Cairo at 9.15. Hotel d'Angleterre.
