Sun 15. [15 April 1900] Up at 6 and went with Mr Dunn to the Kiameh to
see the Greek Palm Sunday. We pushed through the crowd with
some difficulty and established ourselves near the Patriarch who
looked very splendid in a jewelled mitre, and all the archimandrites in
gold vestments andblack veils. (On our way down we went into the
Russian buildings and saw the columns of the Street of Columns.) We
watched the whole ceremony of the Communion. About 8 the
Yacovlews arrived so we hooked onto them and walked down to the
Sepulchre, the Latin Easter Sunday mass being now over, from
whence we saw the Procession - a great olive tree and masses of
palms and candles - and so with Miss Henderson, we slipped out at
10 and they went to church and I came home. About 1.30 we started
off to Nebi Musa [Nabi Musa], I on Nimr who was rather mad. Picked
up Kr‰mer and on the way met the German Vice Consul from Cairo
Breiter and Freiherr Herr von Gr¸nau who rode down with us. After we
left the Jericho road the way was very pleasant and interesting,
through great bare mud hills. Got down about 6 and found our camp
all ready and added to by Ismael Beg. We all dined in our dining tent,
after Kr‰mer and I had seen the moon rise over Moab, and then went
down to the Haram where Nina and I sat with Mahmud Effendi and
Abd es Salam Effendi and Salim Effendi and I talked Arabic with them
while we drank coffee and looked at the people dancing. Below we
had seen Marocco people dancing charmingly. Then we went out
into the covered place outside and saw the Karakos and so to bed at
12.
