Wed 23. [23 March 1898] Clouds high. Shopped. Rode up to the
Otome Toge pass, an exquisite ride through bare hill country covered
with high dead grass. Saw Fuji. Last mile very steep. Below us a
wide valley leading over to Hakone. Glorious view from top of pass.
Fuji 20 miles away, rising straight up beyond Gotemba, at first with a
bar of cloud across it, then clear. Lunched in the shelter of a tiny tea
house, bitter wind. Walked up a hill in the snow. Fuji covered. Saw
Hakone Lake. Then down quickly and in at 4. Talked in the evening
to the Hellyers to whom the P. [Pessimist] had introduced me by letter.
Quite agreeable.
